Field Ionization

The IBT group at LBNL has been developing compact neutron generators for various applications. These compact neutron generators are based on various plasma discharges such as Penning, RF, and ECR. Taking the next step in striving for compactness, a field emission ion source is being developed for use in a neutron generator. In such a device, the ions are produced by high-field emission and the use of high RF or DC discharge powers can be avoided.

Mature nanotechnology allows for the production of nano-needles on a cathode, while the anode consists of a deuterated target. The target is biased with a high voltage. The needles enhance the field emission coefficient to produce deuterium ions; these ions are accelerated towards the target where they produce neutrons in a nuclear fusion process.
